285 German 19th Century Sterling Chamberstick

An 1880-1890 German sterling chamberstick. This Hanau Silver chamberstick, has a delightful square form with two figures and embossed foliate. The decoration is repeated on each of its four sides, and is similar to the smaller #253 chamberstick from Hanau. The square shaped drip tray, raised column and the removable sconce are extensively decorated in repousse with classical maidens bathing and putti or cherubs, some blowing trumpets. These figures are surrounded by swags and curves in the same typical Art Nouveau or Jugendstihl style. The hall marks on the removable sconce and the tray are 93C and marks of Hanau makers marks of either Karl Kurz and Georg Roth, or both (see the marks on #253). It was imported to London in 1897 by Edwin Thomson Bryant. The tiny marks of Q for the year, F for import and ETB for Edwin Thomson Bryant who also imported #253 can be seen on the tray. The chamberstick is 10.5 x 10.5 cm and 8.6 cm tall. It weighs 165grams
