191 English 19th Century Tortoise Shell Chamberstick

A 19th century tortoiseshell and sterling silver chamberstick. A very rare chamberstick made of tortoiseshell with a sterling candle holder and a gadrooned silver rim. The shell has extermely rich colours typical of the period. The silver rim, which is pierced, holds the tortoise shell in place with three tiny pins. The tortoise shell of the chamberstick is attached by the candle holder to a small silver circular ring which serves as the stand for the chamberstick. The finger holder is attached to the silver rim. The base of the chamberstick (and the removable bobeche) have the hallmarks for London, the year 1895 and the silver smiths mark of J Batson & Son (Henry John Batson & Albert Edward Batson). The chamberstick has a diameter of 11.3 cm, height of 6.5 cm and it weighs 100 grams.
