279 South American 19th Century Sterling Chamberstick

A mid 19th century South American sterling chamberstick. One of a pair, see #280, this elegant chamberstick has a plain, partly hammered round shaped base, with a slightly raised and folded rim. The base has a small rise towards the mid-point from which the stem emerges. The long stem has a unique design, which is not decorated. The stem has several concentric rings and is connected at about its midpoint to a long finger holder which has a key like hole, probably to enable hanging on the wall. The stem or candle holder is much wider after the midpoint and is hollow to enable holding a wide candle. It ends in a fixed round wax dripper. The pair of chambersticks, which have no marks, were tested to show 900-925 silver, and were bought from a collector who lived in Uruguay. The chamberstick diameter is 13 cm and its height is 11.6 cm. It weighs 340 grams
