An 1857 Sheffield English sterling chamberstick. The chamberstick has the classic large circular base or drip pan. It has an elegant gadrooned decoration throughout the chamberstick, the detachable nozzle and the top and bottom of the snuffer. Its thick well rendered classical urn-form stem is supported atop multistep gradually widening base. The finger holder is a coiled cobra handleand its body is comprised of hundreds diamond carved scales as “real” to the touch. The chamberstick, detachable nozzle and original snuffer are all marked with the Sheffield city mark and JC over NC makers’ mark for the well regarded Sheffield partnership of James & Nathaniel Creswick. The brothers were listed at Paternoster Row, Sheffield and at Craven St. London in 1840s and 50s. The chamberstick also has the date letter O for the year 1857. The chamberstick has a 17 cm diameter, is 7 cm tall and weighs 410 grams. The interior of the stem also marked with what appears to be a hammer.
